I’m pleased to announce that I am the Official Sydney Rebel for the next three Sydney Triple Crown races, and am sworn in as our race manager for the Melbourne Cup.
On 25 September, I will officially begin the demanding first task of organising a fully trained Australian contender to the premier race in the country. I have two white door seats ready to accept any in-race assistance, and ready to greet my client and his jockey if he returns home.
This means we need to find a room for Victor Chandler, my trusted support, as we head for the draft. He will be flying from Melbourne to Sydney early this week in search of matelies – and he is well placed to visit this great race.
It will be very hard for his agent, Mark O’Sullivan, to track Victor every day, but it’s important for him to contact us so that we can find a room to use for them and I will be checking a few mornings a week, looking forward to hearing from Victor.
This is a race I’ve raced a lot of times – and I have seen plenty of horses come through this fence.
I’ve only had a chance to ride one Melbourne Cup and Peter Snowden’s 34th place placing last year was a memorable experience. I believe it’s still a place, not just for me, but for those who have seen and watched for a long time. It has been a privilege to be part of it.
There’s lots of things to look forward to including the racing world press conference in Melbourne later this week, and my life-time-dream come true – a welcome return home trip to Sydney. But if the days of 90 degree heat and humidity have taught me anything it’s that you have to be fit and vibrant at all times.
It’s going to be a good challenge for me, one I’m absolutely determined to take on.
I have a terrific supporting cast around me, which includes four jockeys as well as a superground caretaker, a driver and backroom colleagues from a mixed heritage club.
I feel privileged to have such an amazing crew around me, not just in my time, but to say that they all consider me a friend, that they’re encouraged by how much I care and support my race effort.
If you’d like to meet these experienced jockeys, be it out of their comfort zone, experience or at the 2014 Coolmore Stud Melbourne Cup, have a look in our next issue of WIN Magazine and offer their support. In short, if you’re interested in being involved in Sydney racing, consider joining my team to help win the Sydney Triple Crown and keep the spotlight on the races of Australia. You’ll win!
