Part of the impetus for SBS “idle-home” TV project No Way Home is Penrith Panthers halfback Benji Marshall. He is being credited as the catalyst for the passion for this round 7 NRL opener who, while nursing a quad injury since injuring his shoulder at the club’s Carrington training ground on training practice in May, is determined to get his nation-leading club playing again by Origin time. “He has probably a bit of the personality to do that,” said SBS director of video production Rob Yong. ”It is not to do with excuses or anything like that, but his passion to do this campaign and this series – and it is built on right positioning at every single platform, and not leaving his spot to free-fall and possibly him just languishing – what we’re doing is interesting because it makes him harder to pigeonhole.” In the first episode, SBS programming director Peter Stubbs and producer Samantha Golden show footage of Marshall to the delight of coach Ivan Cleary and key players Barry Oates and Tim Sheens during the first round, showing how impressive he is in having such a wealth of experience. Clever head-coaching by the former Storm and Sharks player, now a Kangaroos coach, and a telling insight into the hard work that has gone into this pre-season culminating in this first instalment, show how the intense and usually intense training environment of that camp, and the passion of Marshall for this series, are given the light treatment in the documentary. ”We always prefer to tell the story in three hours, but this was going to be longer,” Stubbs said. ”He is definitely the reason why we went out there and got all these footage because he was so keen to tell his story. It is a little down to the first round. ”We said, can we show as much and hopefully get it right when the guys return to training. ”We’re always trying to stay out there a little bit, but obviously the Mudgee game’s a big crowd we’re going to have and then the match against Manly would have the following schedule with the Panthers coming back and touring the Gold Coast. ”This is one episode where we were going to show him in pads with shoulder pads but we didn’t have an hour because it was way too much, so we had to wait for the interviews and see what he was up to.” Marshall did not feature in the penultimate episode because of his injury, and said Cleary made it clear he wasn’t out to humiliate himself at home before the game.
