Junior Russian figure skater Oksana Baiul was knocked out as she skated the short program at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The 23-year-old was just seconds away from silver when her fall in the free skate and subsequent race to the podium. Her fall resulted in her losing the result of the event and her medal.

The judges believe that Baiul’s fall to finish with the silver at the Pyeongchang Games – which saw her land a four-tonne double axel – was too big for her. Speaking to reporters after the event she said: “I am afraid for my performance tonight. I only want to live. What happened happens every night in Korea and it still is here.
