ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A man accused of beating his infant son to death and abandoning him in a car outside a mall was arraigned Tuesday on preliminary charges of felony child homicide and felony criminal neglect.

The suspect, 27-year-old Charles W. Kohler, of Sterling Heights, is charged with two counts of felony murder and two counts of felony criminal neglect. He was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court Tuesday morning.

He’s accused of killing his son, 3-month-old Benton Kohler, on Oct. 27. The boy’s body was found at the side of the road by emergency crews responding to a report of a crash in a parking lot at Magnolia Mall.

Prosecutors said Kohler had taken the baby from his home and left the car unattended while he had his other children at work. A mother went to Kohler’s workplace shortly after his arrest but police later arrested him after he didn’t show up for a court hearing in the child’s case.

The Department of Children and Families is now investigating Kohler and his possible other children.
