That is because Milner has not been seen at the heart of Arsenal’s defence for almost three months, and in Arsenal’s last seven Premier League meetings, he has only notched up just one assist.

Having suffered a further setback on Thursday, Milner could play a key role as Wenger tries to ease his club’s injury woes.

It remains to be seen whether Wenger will use Milner, so regularly last season when out of favour, again.

Norwich’s John Ruddy also admits some managers are wary of calling on Milner, with a heavy workload carrying alongside competing for a starting spot, but he has no fear of doing so.

Ruddy, 25, said: “There are always challenges when you come to the first team with a footballer of James’ skill level. You have to adapt to him.

“He has put a lot of hard work in. James is an athlete.

“He brings intelligence. He adapts quickly to things and his eye for the game is quite sharp.

“We have had his scoring record of 12 goals – he certainly deserves his opportunity as it is up for grabs.”
